7 Quick Takes Friday

This post is linked to 7 Quick Takes Friday at Conversion Diary.

1. I have had repair people at my house all week giving me bids: a handyman, a glass guy, a carpenter, a landscaper, a brick guy. Sometimes home maintenance seems never ending.

2. Mr. Darcy has not had a great week. BUT, as I write this, he has just eaten for the first time in two days!!! It’s insane how happy this has made us. 🙂

3. Still haven’t decided on the curtain fabric. Go here if you would like to weigh in. I’m having serious problems with indecision.

4. Jules over at Pancakes and French Fries is a really good writer. She wrote a very amusing post this week about women and our hair. Check it out here. I think it’s worth your time.

5. Our city elections are on Saturday. The mayoral race has turned a bit nasty. And there doesn’t seem to be a clearly good choice. This kind of stuff always makes me want to skip voting. But in the end, I usually vote. I feel too guilty, otherwise.

6. Mr. Bingley is being a pretty good sport about all of the extra time and attention given to Mr. Darcy. Except for the shorter walks and/or lack of walks. He has tried to take off on his own a few times. Pretty ornery for eleven years old. 😉

7. Energy. I am really feeling a lack of it these days. Anyone have any surefire foods or vitamins that they feel really help with energy levels? I know fruits and veggies, blah, blah, blah. But I’m looking for specifics here. I am taking a high quality multi-vitamin, vitamin D and fish oil. Suggestions, please!

Happy Friday!

7 Quick Takes Friday

This post is linked up to 7 Quick Takes Friday at Conversion Diary.

1. I have ten people coming for Thanksgiving.

3. Because of numbers 1 & 2, The Room Of No Purpose is getting attacked today. Please pray for me and my friend Vicki, who is coming to help. We’re going to need it. 🙂

4. Is it just me, or does Skating With The Stars seem like one of the worst ideas ever?!

5. A certain blond with a coupon website needs a new commercial. She has the crazy eyes in the current one. I’m just sayin!

6. I have not bought even one Christmas present.

7. I did my first ever giveaway on my blog this past week. I think it went pretty well.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and gets all of their Thanksgiving preparations done!

7 Quick Takes Friday

This post is linked up to 7 Quick Takes Friday at Conversion Diary. You should check out her blog. Jen always has great scorpion stories and her mother in-law is called Yaya. Her life is very entertaining.

1. Julia Sugarbaker’s birthday is tomorrow. Happy birthday, Julia! I love the six months every year when I’m not quite so much older than you! 😉

2. After my freak out earlier this week, things went pretty well. Except… I fell. I was walking and talking to friends at a park one minute and lying flat on my back while bleeding the next minute. I’ve never been good at multi-tasking, but walking and talking at the same time has never been a problem. So, either I’ve become extemely uncoordinated or karma’s a you know what. It’s very possible that all grace gained from those early ballet classes is completely gone. But can I face the prospect of an old lady ballet class?

3. After all the cleaning I did last month, my house still looks pretty good. Except, the pink bathroom is STILL not done and my closet clean out halted midway through. I need to get motivated again!

4. One of the fist times I read Conversion Diary, Jen was talking about the proliferation of Trucknutz in Austin. I confess, I had been feeling quite smug about Dallas, since I had never spotted such a thing around here. But that smugness came to an end earlier this week when the husband called (voice activated, hands free) on the way home to say, “You’re never going to believe what’s hanging off of the truck in front of me”. And so my illusions of classiness about truck owners in the Metroplex have come to an end.

5. Nebraska takes on Texas tomorrow at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln and I’m actually going to watch the game. Sadly, on TV, not in person. Go Huskers!!!

6. Mr. Darcy has become very arthritically challenged over the last week. There is definitely a doctor visit in his future. I hope they can do something to help him. He still really loves to play, but this has hampered his activity. I can tell he’s really frustrated.

7. I have decided after all of my contractor/repair people woes over the last month, that I must lower my standards. I will expect from now on that they will arrive late and not clean up after themselves, not return phone calls, etc… And then when things go well I will be extremely happy. And when they don’t, I can just shrug my shoulders. This may seem like a defeatist attitude, but it’s actually very practical. There’s no reason to expend so much energy and emotion on stuff I can’t change. But I will finally start submitting all of my reviews to Angie’s List. I used to only do the good ones because I felt bad about possibly causing someone to lose business. But I’m done with that. I’m just going to be truthful, not vindictive or anything, and hope that this is the right thing to do.

Have a great weekend and please pray for us, as we are going to try and tackle the giant mirror stuck to the wall on Sunday. It should be interesting!

7 Quick Takes Friday (Lessons In Non-Fundraising)

This post is hooked up to 7 Quick Takes Friday at Conversion Diary.

I haven’t posted in almost a week because I buried myself in cleaning and house repair tasks. And of course, I didn’t get everything done. The event we held at our house last night was not technically a fundraiser. No one was asked for any money. The organization is new to our area and they needed to get their name out. So that they may raise money in the future. When taking on a task like this for the first time, you make certain assumptions and have certain ideas about how things will go. What follows is what I learned in this process.

1. You may think that you have a group of like minded friends who will turn out for stuff as long as free food and booze are in the mix, but you don’t. Or at least I don’t. It’s surprisingly difficult to get people to take a few hours on a week night to come to your home and hear about something which they are quite sure will be boring and intrusive to their wallet. (By the way, it was neither of those things.)

2. I can’t really blame people for getting the wrong impression, because the invitations were ugly and not very explanatory. Which leads to number three…

3. If I ever do something like this again, I will not keep my mouth shut when I have misgivings about the process. I know it’s hard to believe that I ever do keep my mouth shut, but I did this time even though I was concerned when I saw the invites. Never again. Now, if I could just master being a big mouth in a tactful way…

4. Even when the turn out is not what you would hope, you are given the opportunity to meet incredibly nice people and learn about lots of organizations that you never knew existed.

5. When it rains, it pours. About an hour after learning that I had placed my food order at the wrong location (1/2 hour away), my vacuum cleaner decided to quit after 10 years of faithful service. Thank you, honey, for leaving work early to bail me out.

6. People will come up with the lamest/funniest/BS excuses in order to not come to an event like this. I’m really not being bitter here. Some of them were super funny! Note to self: don’t ever do this in the future. Just say you won’t be coming and leave it at that.

7. I learned shortly before the party that a good friend’s sister is ill. Please offer prayers for Marie.

Have a lovely weekend.

7 Quick Takes Friday

1. Thanks everyone for your encouragement after my freak out yesterday. I really appreciate it. Even the threatened butt kicking from a certain Floridian on Facebook. 😉

2. The husband told me the most outrageous story about a former co-worker having two fiances at the same time. Don’t worry, he got caught!

3. I did actually get a few things accomplished on Thursday. The prettiest being, the hanging of these pictures in the pink bathroom:

The artist of all four pictures above is Jennifer Lommers.

4. The clothes piles are gone:

And I now have two bags of clothes and two bags of shoes to give away.

5. As you can see from the picture above, all the closet crap has been put away and the donation stuff should be gone by the end of the day today.

6. Mr. Bingley decided to sleep in his bed even though I moved it!

7. My blog friend Julia at Hooked On Houses was nice enough to let the new Nate Berkus Show use pictures from her blog. All she asked was that her blog was given credit. It was not. This is not cool. It’s even worse than it seems at first because the only reason I and lots of other people know about his show is because the bloggers have been promoting. I can’t tell you how many blogs I have read over the last couple of weeks where the writer is peeing her pants because she got invited to a taping of his show that focuses on blogging. So while the show is acting like it’s all supportive of bloggers, it’s actually disrespectful. Like I said, not cool.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the beautiful weather!

7 Quick Takes Friday

This post is linked up with 7 Quick Takes Friday over at Conversion Diary.

1. The husband had an article published in a professional journal. Yeah him!

Mystery Journal

Are you impressed with with my ability to redact? I think I should give a seminar. Anyone from WikiLeaks out there? Seriously, call me. I can totally hook you up – extra paper, markers, white out. Whatever it takes, so you don’t get people killed.

2. I had to go to Container Store for the husband. Of course, I couldn’t leave without buying stuff for the house. Here is the result:

The after of no before.

I’m a bad blogger, so I forgot to take a before picture. If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, I’m sure you’ll believe me when I say it wasn’t pretty. I already owned everything except for these:

I love how pretty these are!

And this frog:

From ashtray to paper clip holder.

***Special Note To People I Know Who Smoke****
If you put ashes in my pretty frog, bad things will happen.

3. I switched milk brands this week. My regular brand had an expiration date of 9/11. I know it’s crazy, but I just couldn’t put it in my cart.

4. I saw a friend’s husband at a meeting on Monday. He brought me this card from their youngest, whom I have ridiculously not seen for over a year:

Look at the hearts!

Look how good her printing is!

I’m quite proud that I didn’t cry. It was a close call.

5. Thanks to everyone who weighed in on the rug.

I have decided that it is in fact too small. Never fear, I believe I have found it a new home in the husband’s office. Special thanks to Amanda at AB Home Interiors, who took the time to give her professional opinion. She’s a designer, and it’s beyond the call of blog friend for her to take time and weigh in on stuff that she should get paid for. It’s much appreciated.

6. Mr. Bingley went to the vet this week for a regular check up. He’s doing well. As usual, he gave himself an arthritis attack by getting too excited to see everybody and jumping all over the place. I keep telling him, “You’re ten!”. But he never listens.

7. We’re going out to dinner this weekend with two different sets of friends. I’m really looking forward to the great food and great conversation!

Have a lovely weekend everyone, and try not to melt.
